This first-person experience delves into the empowering concept of limitless human potential, if so recognized and attempted to be aptly leveraged, wherein certain remarkable stories of individuals who have shattered barriers, propelling them into pushing the boundaries of what was once believed impossible, and stemming from the inspirational talks of my CEO & MD Rampraveen Swaminathan – during the course of an extremely enriching and truly insightful three-day Annual Leadership Conclave of my company, Mahindra Logistics, which successfully concluded yesterday.
Introduction
In a world where challenges seem insurmountable and dreams appear distant, the adage “Impossible is Nothing, Nothing is Impossible” serves as a reminder of the extraordinary resilience and ingenuity of the human spirit. Throughout history, business leaders and leaders in fields as diverse as sports, science, the arts, music, etc have continually attempted to defy the odds, accomplishing feats usually thought and termed as unattainable.
I attempt to encapsulate here certain key takeaways from Ram’s dialogues on this valuable and extremely pertinent subject to all present at the Conclave during the three occasions therein – one each during the initial and concluding days and a special moment in time – when I was fortunate to hear him elaborate on it personally to me, during our one-on-one at the breakfast table yesterday.
The Power of Human Belief
At the core of every remarkable achievement lies the power of human belief. Countless visionaries, inventors, and pioneers have faced skepticism, criticism, and naysayers, but their unwavering faith in their ideas and abilities proved that the impossible is merely a perception. The tale of Thomas Edison, who failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb, truly exemplifies how perseverance and belief in one’s self can conquer even the most daunting challenges.
Triumph over Adversity
The human spirit thrives when faced with adversity. History is replete with stories of people who overcame immense hardships to achieve greatness. Helen Keller, despite being both blind and deaf, emerged as an inspiring author and political activist. Her life’s journey showcases the boundless potential within us all, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Pushing the Limits of Human Performance
Extreme athletes constantly redefine human capabilities, proving that nothing is impossible when dedication, training, and determination converge. From climbing the highest peaks to breaking the sound barrier, these individuals inspire us to reach for the stars and shatter preconceived notions of what is achievable. A short video clip showcasing the legendary American professional basketball player Kobe Bryant screened by him was so apt to drive home this point. The sublime truth is, there are very few things in this world that are truly impossible. The underlying messages which were so succinctly yet unambiguously brought out by him were – anything that can be imagined can be achieved, given enough time, relentless effort, unwavering focus, and rock-solid determination.
The Power of Resilience
Resilience is the ability to cope with and recover from setbacks. Leaders who have inculcated this sterling quality do not experience less distress, grief, or anxiety than other people do. Instead, they use healthy coping skills to handle such difficulties in ways that foster strength and growth, often emerging stronger than they were before. In a similar context and messaging to the collective mass – he brought out the unmistakable fact that resilient organizations when faced with adversity do not just bounce back better; they thereafter actually thrive in hostile environments by continuously adapting and reaching the pinnacles of success.
As I read someplace, sometime back – Resilience allows individuals to turn adversity into an opportunity for growth by learning from failures and setbacks. Resilient people see challenges as learning experiences, not as threats or obstacles. They can marshall their available resources, ask for help when needed, and find ways to manage the situation they are facing.
As a leader deeply rooted in reality yet who’s constantly pushed me to dream big – ever since he chose me to join the company once I completed my term with the Army, his core messages on this subject hugely reverberated across dimensions of thought yet kept me grounded – that of course, there will be obstacles along the way, there will be times when one wants to give up -but if one keeps believing in oneself and never give up on your dreams, you will eventually achieve them—three words here to summarise – Bias for Action.
Some clear messages which resonated with me from his interactions regarding attempting in achieving the impossible:
Self-belief – This is the most important step of them all. His prominent and underlying message to all was – if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. So one needs to develop, foster and retain faith in one’s abilities and never give up on those dreams & goals.
Set realistic goals – Realism to a leader is what integrity is to human character. Don’t attempt to do too much too soon – yet remember what is on one’s to-do list for the future. Start with small, achievable goals and gradually work your way up to bigger ones till you reach the biggest ones.
Remain persistent – Severe feelings of low morale, self-doubt, and all related feelings. One is human and such emotions will crop up over periods. There will, of course, be setbacks along the way, but don’t let them discourage you. Keep going and eventually, you will reach your chosen destination.
It’s like the 10 Mile race in 1989 while I was undergoing pre-commissioning training at OTA, Chennai – where those who went through it before me had only one “Mantra for Tantra” – keep your head down and keep going – just don’t stop! Victory will kiss the feet of those who display dogged perseverance. It worked like magic for me then and this adage continues to do so even today.
Never give up. No matter how difficult things get, never give up on your dreams. If you keep believing in yourself and never give up, you will eventually achieve them.
While waiting to board the flight back home (when this urge to put it all down here initially overcame me) and during the time it took to touch down back at Base in Mumbai, these words of Muhammad Ali brought out by Ram, resounded with certain other prominent personalities, who have attempted to convey something acutely similar but maybe in different words :
Steve Jobs: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Joel Brown: “I’ve learned that anything is possible if you have the courage to dream big and the determination to never give up.”
He also goes on to have said on another occasion – “The only thing that stands between you and your dream is the will to try and the belief that it is actually possible.”
Douglas McArthur: “The impossible is only possible until it’s done.”
And the best one to pair with Ali’s words and those of Ram’s are those of Audrey Hepburn: –
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible‘!”
Conclusion
The theme “Impossible is Nothing, and Nothing is Impossible” deliberated upon repeatedly by my leader, Ram continues to resonate so deeply within me – it encompasses everything which defines the human experience. From defying gravity and man eventually taking flight to the relentless pursuit of scientific progress and technological innovation, human history is replete with examples of the triumph of human determination, dogged perseverance, and unwavering imagination. Even in the face of adversity, which all humans face from time to time, the unrelenting power of the human spirit has demonstrated repeatedly that there are no limits to what can be achieved if one wants it so and does everything possible to get it so.
As we as leaders within the company jointly forge ahead into an ever-evolving future, his message to the collective audience in general and me as a fortunate member of his Team in particular, which I unwaveringly embraced – was to proactively clinch this mindset, goad oneself to dare to dream big and constantly challenge the inner-self to reach newer heights, for as these learnings unambiguously portray – nothing is beyond accomplishment and ultimate triumph.
IF YOUR DREAM DON’T SCARE YOU – THEY AREN’T BIG ENOUGH Muhammad Ali
